3 Artists I Have Recently Come to Admire

1. Nick Fedaeff

Education:Polytechnic Institute - Russia
Multimedia College - Auckland, New Zealand
 Work:
Artist, Musician, Composer - Russia
Advertising Specialist - Russia, New Zealand
Artist - New Zealand

"I am a musician, performer and an artist. For a period of time in my life I was more of a musician than a performer and more of a performer than an artist. Today I am much more of an artist than ever before! The most important thing is that people are buying my paintings! I paint a lot. It feels like there is a huge stream of energy running through my head and sticking onto canvas.
I practice art by doing solo exhibition, illustrating books, running art classes for beginners and am also involved in a few art-projects. Mostly I paint figures, but a better definition would be - I paint stories - The themes of relationships, men, women and love. My work is colourful, vibrant and dynamic with a quirky edge and sense of humour. "

Summer Time, Nick Fedaeff,

"Inspiration can come from many sources - dreams, observing life, other painters or the esoteric creative seed randomly appearing at will" says New Zealand Russian born artist Nick Fedaeff.

And certainly these rich sources of influence provide Nick with elements that he translates to canvas with a touch of fantasy and humor.

We see reality but exaggerated. We see lies but with hidden truth. This soft surrealist style depicted in Nick's paintings pulls audiences by the balls and say "LOOK AT ME". AMAZING.

"From her studio in Auckland, New Zealand, Sofia Minson creates soulful, finely detailed portrait, landscape and surreal oil paintings. She is inspired by the land, myths and people of New Zealand and the unity she sees amongst richly diverse cultures from around the world.

Born in Auckland in 1984, Sofia spent much of her childhood in Samoa, Sri Lanka and China due to her father's civil engineering work. On returning to New Zealand as a teenager she discovered her sister's 10-year-old discarded set of 'deliciously blendable' oil paints. Sofia's love affair with this medium began. Painting enabled her to reconnect with her homeland, her Ngati Porou Maori, Swedish and Irish heritage and all that she had experienced overseas. "

Not only did I love what she did for Leukaemia and Blood Foundation of NZ in 2009 for "Shave an Artist" Charity Art Auction, Sofia is an inspirational NZ Oil Painter. The work on the left, Sabire, Woman with Patience (2008). Inspiration for this work came from an old woman Sofia met and photographed in Turkey in June 2008. On a walk through the beautiful Kapadokyan landscape, Sofia briefly encountered the woman waiting patiently with her collection of scarves to display and sell to passers-by.

Unconsciously the ancient history of the land and civilization of Asia Minor weaved its way into this portrait. As Sofia painted the piece, layer-by-layer, the woman's wrinkles deepened and her character strengthened. Her immense whakapapa (genealogy) is suggested in her old yet glowing skin. The vastness of the region's history shows in the seriousness and wisdom of her eyes. The grooves of her face and the dark folds of her headscarf represent the weaving, bending and cyclical nature of life. Meanwhile the flower-patterned scarf with its ornamental pearl edge brings a balancing prettiness and intricately decorative quality to the painting.

On finishing the work Sofia chose the name Sabire for the lady, which is a Turkish name meaning "woman with patience". She felt that it encapsulated her own layered, lengthy painting process as well as the breadth of the old woman's spirit, which had revealed itself over the three months it took to create the portrait.

3. Dick Frizzel
Education
1964
Ilam Art School, Canterbury, New Zealand,
Birth 1943, Auckland, New Zealand
Lives and works in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand

"Dick Frizzell initially worked as a commercial artist after graduating from the University of Canterbury in 1964. This introduced him to the notion of art making as a profession. It also placed him within the environment from which much of his imagery has evolved. Frizzell’s art is humourous yet touching, with a love for the advertisements, billboards and posters from the 1950s and 1960s, such as the Four-Square Man, that are familiar to many New Zealanders.

Charlie on The Great NZ Song Book, Dick Frizzell.
This was later followed with an exhibition based upon his appropriation of the Tiki in paintings that reinvented this symbol in Cubist and Art Deco style. Although humorous, these works raised questions about ownership of a culture and who has the right to utilise its icons and symbols. Frizzell has received considerable recognition from the art institutions in New Zealand and in 1997 was the subject of a major retrospective exhibition toured by the City Gallery Wellington."

As New Zealanders, we all know the "The Great New Zealand Song Book", and the iconic front cover of Charlie 'The Four Square Man' holding a guitar is an original work by Dick Frizzell and was commissioned specifically for the release of the NZ Song book. It's simple colours and sophisticated design has made it so iconic.

This amazing expressionist pop artist depicts kiwiana icons into his often cartoon-like paintings and lithographs. The painting below, "Micky to Tiki" is a wonderful print by one of NZ's favourite artists. He has humourously morphed Mickey Mouse into the tiki, a NZ icon:

People sometimes say "nothing every goes on in New Zealand", well today I have proven these people wrong. The three excellent individuals has done NZ proud. We should follow in their footsteps, whether you want to be an artist, musician, singer, drummer, bus driver, doctor, librarian, there's always a place for you in this world and NZ is the place to be!
